View from Schloßberg to the Freiburg Cathedral
”I assume that Freiburg Cathedral will always be the most beautiful church tower on earth.” This somewhat exuberant assessment was once made by Swiss art historian Jacob Burckhardt. However, if the beauty of Freiburg Cathedral (or Minster, as it is officially called) is to be preserved for future generations, constant restoration work needs to be done.
This is due to the building material, red sandstone, which is prone to weathering such as acid rain, exhaust fumes, and severe wind. This is the reason why virtually nobody in recent decades has seen Freiburg Cathedral without scaffolding. The recent restoration of the church steeple alone took more than ten years.
